Daniel Ling of Cobble Hill, British Columbia passed away peacefully and with dignity at home on Saturday, August 9, surrounded in love by his family. He is survived by his wife Jane, his former wife Nan Phillips, his two sons, Philip and Alister, two stepsons Ken and Brendan, seven grandchildren and brother George. He is predeceased by brothers Peter and Alan. He will be sorely missed by his llama Lleroy.

He emigrated from England in 1963 to serve as Principal of the Montreal Oral School for the Deaf. After 20 years of research and teaching at McGill University, he served as a dean at the University of Western Ontario. His life’s legacy has been teaching deaf children to listen and speak. For this he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1999.

A true Renaissance man, Dan built on his roots as a scientist and violinist, striving to improve the sounds of the violins, violas and cellos he created. Feared by the crabs and prawns of Cowichan Bay, he also plumbed the depths of the coastal waters of British Columbia for salmon, halibut, and the cod that bore his name (Ling)
